8 Reasons People Are Making Tuning Forks Part of Their Evening
8 Reasons People Are Making Tuning Forks Part of Their Evening
A five-minute, screen-free ritual that's quietly replacing the late-night scroll.
Be honest: how did your last evening end? For a lot of us, it's the same story. Lights off, phone on, and forty minutes of scrolling that leaves you more wired than when you started.
Nearly 3,000 people have now ordered a Nooburn tuning fork, and most of them had never held one before. They weren't looking for anything complicated. They wanted a simple, calming way to mark the end of the day that didn't involve another screen.
We asked what made the habit stick. These are the eight reasons that came up again and again.
What is a tuning fork, exactly?
A tuning fork is a two-pronged metal tool that vibrates when you tap it. Musicians have used them for centuries. Today, many people use them as part of a relaxing personal ritual, either feeling the gentle hum on the body or listening to the tone as it fades.
You feel it, you don't just hear it

Most people expect a tuning fork to sound like a bell. A weighted fork like our 128Hz is different: strike it, rest the stem on your shoulder, wrist or the back of your hand, and you feel a slow, soft hum travel through the metal.
It's a strange, pleasant sensation the first time. Many of our customers tell us that feeling is exactly what got them hooked: it gives your attention something gentle and physical to settle on at the end of a busy day.
Weighted vs. unweighted
Weighted forks (128Hz, 68.05Hz) have round weights on the prongs, so they hum longer and are made to be felt. Unweighted forks (528Hz, 512Hz) ring with a clear tone you listen to as it fades.
A complete ritual in about five minutes

There's no app to open, no class to book and no mat to roll out. Strike, place, breathe, repeat. The whole ritual fits between brushing your teeth and switching off the lamp.
Because it's so short, it's easy to keep doing. People who tried meditation apps and gave up often find a fork easier to stick with: it's a small, physical action rather than one more thing on a screen.
It gives you a reason to put the phone down

A tuning fork only works when your hands are on it. That simple fact makes it a natural full stop for screen time.
Several customers keep the fork on the nightstand where the phone used to be. Phone down, fork up: a cue your evening is winding down.
Try this tonight
Put your phone on charge in another room. Leave your fork and mallet on the nightstand. When you get into bed, reach for the fork instead.
Feel one, hear the other

Our sets combine both types so you can choose what suits your mood. Some nights you'll want the quiet hum of the weighted 128Hz on your shoulder. Other nights you'll want to sit back and listen to the 528Hz ring out and slowly fade.
Having both means your ritual doesn't get stale. Many people use the weighted fork first, then finish with a few rounds of listening.
Nothing to charge, refill or subscribe to

A Nooburn fork is a solid piece of aluminium alloy. There are no batteries, no cables, no subscriptions and no refills. With basic care it should last for years.
In a world of gadgets that need updating, there's something refreshing about a tool that just works every time you pick it up.
It's something to share
Partners, friends and kids almost always ask to try it. It's a simple, screen-free thing to do together, and it often turns into a little shared ritual of its own.
It also makes a thoughtful gift: unusual, beautiful to hold and easy to start with.

Your 5-minute evening ritual
-
1Settle in
Sit or lie somewhere comfortable. Dim the lights and put your phone away. -
2Strike
Hold the fork by the stem and tap one prong gently on the mallet or your knee. Never strike it on a hard surface. -
3Place or listen
Weighted fork: rest the stem on your shoulder, wrist or the back of your hand. Unweighted fork: hold it a few inches from your ear. -
4Breathe
Breathe slowly while the hum or tone fades, usually 20–40 seconds. -
5Repeat
Repeat 5–8 times, switching spots or forks. Then lights out.
Tip
Consistency matters more than length. Five minutes every evening tends to feel better than half an hour once a week.
What people notice first
We're in the process of collecting verified reviews, so instead of quotes, here's what our customers most often mention when they write to us:
- The sensation surprises them. The hum of a weighted fork is unlike anything else.
- It becomes a cue. Picking up the fork signals that the day is over.
- The family wants a turn. Partners and kids ask to try it.
- It's easy to keep doing. Five minutes is short enough to fit into any evening.

What's the difference between the forks?
The 128Hz and 68.05Hz are weighted forks you rest on the body to feel a soft hum. The 528Hz and 512Hz are unweighted forks with a clear tone you listen to.
How do I strike the fork?
